“Elephant in the room” – 2021 image tells sad, desperate story of humans & Nature

31/12/2021

A picture, it is often said, tells a thousand words… The power of photography is known to be incredibly strong and well-known for its capacity for storytelling.

It ( photography) can transform light and time into something physical. It’s a universal language we all speak, and great photos communicate so much, in an instant, without words or sound. We think in still images; our memory is formed by them

Here a wildlife photograph tells the story of an animal – arguably, it’s potential abuse and the perpetrators.

Elephant in the room, by Adam Oswell, Australia Zoo visitors watch a young elephant performing underwater. Oswell was disturbed by this scene, and organisations concerned with the welfare of captive elephants say performances like this encourage unnatural behaviour. In Thailand, there are now more elephants in captivity than in the wild. With the Covid pandemic causing tourism to collapse, elephant sanctuaries are becoming overwhelmed with animals that can no longer be looked after by their owners.”
