The reports of a tsunami impacting Lord Howe Island last night …

A tsunami warning for New Zealand and Australia’s Lord Howe Island ( 700 km off New South Wales ) , sparked by a 7.7 magnitude undersea earthquake near New Caledonia, causing small tsunami waves to hit Norfolk Island and prompting prompted marine warnings for Lord Howe Island, 700km off the coast of New South Wales – beg the question…

What is a tsunami?

A tsunami is a ‘destructive surge of water caused by underwater earthquakes’ ( National Geographic )

Note that , in this case ‘The earthquake caused small tsunami waves to hit Norfolk Island and briefly prompted marine warnings for Lord Howe Island, 700km off the coast of New South Wales… had no other impacts.

I personally saw the ‘end results’ of the Japanese tsunami of 2011 – my wife and I visited there by pure coincidence about a year later and even then I was awestruck as to the devastation left in the wake of the tsunami  …. This video footage shows the immediate impact…
