Plants are finally in the spotlight!

09/01/2022

They count, they hunt, they deceive, they communicate, they protect their relatives and they manipulate animals for their own ends.

With “The Green Planet” – a brand new five-part series entirely dedicated to plants and fungi fronted by passionate naturalist Sir David Attenborough – at the  Plantlife charity we are all enormously excited to see the BBC kick off 2022 with a firm focus on plants some twenty-six years after The Private Life Of Plants aired on BBC One.

Sir David says ‘The world has suddenly become plant conscious… An awakening and an awareness of how important the natural world is to us all’ and as the Plantlife Charity “we simply could not agree more!”

“Indeed here at Plantlife we have been thrilled by the rising passion YOU have shown for helping us save and protect wild plants. From getting behind our call to mow road verges less and later, to helping us save and restore our remaining fragments of wildflower meadows, YOUR support has been transformative. But with one in five British wild flowers under threat we simply cannot afford to lose momentum now. Beyond boosting plant love the biggest impact we’re hoping the series will deliver is to highlight just how crucial plants are as we face the climate emergency. As the producers say plants are our ‘unsung heroes … our greatest allies. They do such a lot of work for us, they are great carbon capture machines.” This is why we went to Glasgow for COP26 to speak up for plants, and why we will continue to push for a green planet for plants, pollinators and people in 2022 and beyond. “
