New Zealand Bird of the Year becomes ‘Century’ and creates controversy!

The New Zealand Bird of the Year competition run by Forest & Bird Society is a bit different …. ‘Aotearoa New Zealand’s favourite election is back, and the stakes are higher than ever before. This year marks a whole century of Forest & Bird speaking up for nature.’ So, to celebrate its 100th birthday, Forest & Bird is turning its 2023 Bird of the Year, into

Bird of the Century!

Which New Zealand native bird from the last 100 years has captured your heart?

Note that The 2023 election is sporting a new name and five shiny new candidates to celebrate Forest and Bird’s centenary. The plot twist is that all five of those additions are extinct. But the good news is that the other 72 birds are not (yet).

  • The winner will now be revealed on the morning of Wednesday 15 November (NZ time), while voting will still close at 5pm NZDT on Sunday 12 November.
