The joys of Camping

19/11/2022

Today in the United States, it’s National Camping Day

Getting into the great outdoors and communing with nature while going to camp are all fun experiences that kids can learn from and appreciate.…

What is an excellent list of some of the great things about camping ( from NWF )

10. Silliness

The strange side / real, relaxed you – in us all can be let loose during a campout. Whether you release your inner “nature nerd” or everyone learns you are scared of marshmallows, it is a great time to let go and be yourself.

9. Food cooking your sausage over the fire! .There are a few cookout favorites

8. Smiles It’s no secret that being outside makes you happier.

7. Adventures  Embrace the adventures of camping. Hiking, biking, fishing, playing cards, building a sand castle or a fort. Activities like these provide rare opportunities to connect with not only nature, but the wonderful friends, family etc…

6. Lounging Suggested places to lounge: blanket, bench, sand, chair, grass, log, hammock, towel, or any other comfortable surface.

What to do while lounging: talk, play games, tell stories, eat, watch the campfire, sleep, read, listen for birds, or enjoy doing nothing.

5. Campfire Aside from the pressure of building a campfire successfully, this may be my favorite part about camping. It’s mesmerizing to watch the flames dance. There’s also a sense of accomplishment that comes with cooking food over a fire.

4. Gazing at the Sky Camping is an excuse to get away from light pollution and marvel at the brilliance of the night sky. I hope to catch a rare glimpse of a shooting star, try to identify constellations.

3. S’mores …. One regular marshmallow, two bricks of chocolate, and two graham crackers is all I need.

2. Good Company Campouts are defined by the friends and family you’re around. It’s an opportunity to bond with new and old friends, and spend quality time with family or whoever .

1. Nature You don’t have to go far to discover the wonders of the natural world (the moth, not the car).

By 1876, the North Mountain School of Physical Culture was founded in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, where boys from the state came to stay for four months over the summer. This program was meant to teach boys the skills they needed to camp while helping them to grow in physical strength, increasing their health and learning a variety of practical skills.

In the next few decades camping had become fairly commonplace for students who wanted to pursue outdoor activities. By 1910, the Boy Scouts of America, Camp Fire USA and The American Camping Association were all started. The Girls Scouts of America were not far behind. These organizations continued to offer opportunities for young people to learn outdoor skills and participate in camps.

Since that time, summer camps have evolved from just doing outdoor activities to specialized camps that focus on specific activities. Horse-back riding camp, computer camp, math camp, cheerleading camp, and even video game camp are just a few of the many ways that kids and teens participate in summer activities

Sometimes camps are overnight or away camps, while other times they may be organized as day camps, so that local kids come every day to learn and participate but they go home each night to sleep in their own homes.

The American Camp Association is the only national accrediting organization in the United States that works with directors and organizers to keep kids safe and keep the camp operating smoothly. The organization’s goal is to enrich the lives of children, students and adults alike through the experience of camp. “
